OBJECTIVETo obtain a position in a field of journalism where I can apply my experience in news editing, graphics, video, and interactive design. EXPERIENCEChron.com / The Houston Chronicle545,000 DAILY | 738,000 SUNDAYWEB GRAPHICS :: Fall 2006 - PresentI created Flash templates to increase the usability and reduce production time for multimedia pieces. These included an in-line mp3, video and slideshow players; all of which incorporated similar UI elements and could be updated via XML. I also worked on short-term interactive projects like converting elaborate page designs into web-friendly multimedia pieces, interactive cartoons and packaging larger projects. The Plain Dealer356,000 DAILY | 476,000 SUNDAYDESIGN INTERN :: Summer 2005 Designed for the feature and sports departments. In a typical week I would work on two fronts for the daily Arts & Life section, the calendar spread for the Friday tab and other inside pages. Worked closely with editors as design-intense stories were being written (sometimes sharing the byline) so that the two would compliment and reinforce each other. Experimented with alternate story forms and graphic storytelling. Received multiple drunk-dials from celebrity news designer Emmet Smith. The Orange County Register295,000 DAILY | 340,000 SUNDAYDESIGN INTERN :: Summer 2006 Designed for the feature, business and news departments. I worked focused on covers for the tabloid sections (such as Business Monday and weekend entertainment) that emphasized their “coffee table value.” The Boston Globe474,000 DAILY | 685,000 SUNDAYDESIGN INTERN :: Summer 2004 During the average week, my work would include several Living|Arts pages, as well as long-term pages involving hiring and art-directing illustrators, or producing infographics. I took on the Asst. Design Director's full work load for several weeks, which involved producing the Sunday Movies and Ideas sections. The Daily Orange9,000 DAILY (M-F) | 60,000 REGISTERED ONLINE USERSEDITOR IN CHIEF & MANAGING EDITOR :: 2005 I redesigned the production flow to facilitate communication between editors and designers. We instituted a Wednesday planning meeting to discuss the following week's stories and visuals, this gave designers the necessary lead time to properly conceive and assign illustrations. Over the summer I redesigned the paper to a smaller 11" x 14" size with color and introduced a new entertainment insert, 315, which was just a page of event listings before. In my semester as editor in chief I reorganized the offices so designers sat in the same room as the section they designed, as opposed to in a room with other designers. This facilitated communication in the layout of the pages and use of headlines. It helped the 'word' people think more in design terms. These efforts shaved an hour off every night of production and improved the integration of design into the paper. Whereas once we had to fight to get large photos, info-boxes, recaps and alternate story-forms; the editors started generating these elements on their own. I did initial reporting on a campus TV program that was being censored by administrators for mild offenses. After turning the story over to another reporter I watched and transcribed every episode from the show, where we discovered racist and sexist content all paid for by the student activity fee. After we broke the story, the reaction on campus was so intense the chancellor shutdown the entire student-run TV station (the nation's first). At community forums I spoke on behalf of the paper trying to reach out to minority and women's groups who felt betrayed by the media.
